Le Mans Posters 1980 - 1989

Le Mans Posters 1980 - 1989
These Le Mans posters are vintage and original.

Early original posters from the 24-hour races command astronomic prices if and when they ever surface, and reproductions are abound. Even posters from the 60's are priced beyond the average collector's pocket and the 70's posters are following the same trend. The posters have become so collectible that the official body L'Automobile Club de L'Ouest allow them to be sold at the circuit in order to prevent the theft of those actually used to advertise the event!

All of the Le Mans posters are collectible and some of the images are truly outstanding. Beginning collectors should be careful when purchasing later posters to buy only mint copies, as they are reasonably easy to find. However, condition on the earlier posters becomes much more subjective and rarity begins to take priority.

Artist Proof for the 1980 24 Hours of Le Mans Poster Artwork signed by Charles Pascarel.

This is an original "Artist Proof" of the artwork for the 1980 Le Mans poster, signed by the artist, Charles Pascarel (1936).

An Artist Proof is an impression of a print taken in the printmaking process to see the current printing state of a plate while the plate (or stone, or woodblock...) is being worked on by the artist.

This particular Artist Proof comes extremely close to the final version.

It is signed by the artist in the lower right corner while the lower left corner is marked "E.A" which stands for "Epreuve Artiste", French for Artist Proof.

In total it measures some 85 x 65 cm which is considerably larger than the poster which measures 53 x 38 cm.

The 1980 Le Mans poster is part of the "Early Sponsorship and Advertising" era in Le Mans posters and which lasted from 1975 to 1980.

Charles Pascarel found inspiration in the world of the comic strip and shows a great atmospheric rendition of the 1979 winning Porsche 935 K3 of Klaus Ludwig and Bill & Don Whittington battling it out with a BMW M1.

Production and lay-out of the poster itself were in the hands of the Publi-Inter agency.

The race was won by Jean Rondeau and Jean-Pierre Jaussaud in their Nr 16 Rondeau M379B with a total of 338 laps to their name.

For the full results of this race, please see 24 Heures du Mans results 1980.

This very rare Artist Proof for this iconic Le Mans poster is in excellent condition but a bit wavy at the top as visible in the photograph.

Vintage Original 1981 24 Hours of Le Mans Poster.

June 13 & 14, 1981

Near mint condition for its age.

The 1981 Le Mans poster is part of the "The star car used for sponsorship" era in Le Mans posters which lasted from 1981 to 1997.

On the 1981 poster, the track has virtually been eliminated leaving space for a car that had not won the race the previous year, the WM P79/80 Peugeot of Ecurie WM Esso, driven by Guy Frequelin and Roger Dorchy who finished 4th overall in 1980.

This poster is an outspoken example of a "sponsored Le Mans poster".

The newspaper Le Parisien had replaced TF1 as partner in de media coverage of the race, hence their logo on the poster.

The race was won by Jacky Ickx & Derek Bell in their Nr 11 Porsche 936/81 with a total of 354 laps to their name.

The poster is in mint condition for its age.

The 1983 Le Mans poster is part of the "The star car used for sponsorship" era in Le Mans posters which lasted from 1981 to 1997.

The design and color illustration are by Agence SARTEC and probably date from early 1983.

The 1983 poster has the same aesthetic approach as in 1982 but is more neutral.

The circuit installations, which were prominently featured on the 1982 poster, have been reduced to the track itself with a Gitanes sponsored billboard and it features Jacky Ickx's 1982 winning Porsche 956 in stylized form.

The race was won by Vern Schuppan, Hurley Haywood and Al Holbert in their # 3 Porsche 956 with a total of 370 laps to their name.

The 1984 Le Mans poster is part of the "The star car used for sponsorship" era in Le Mans posters which lasted from 1981 to 1997.

There is little known about the photographer or the producer of the 1984 poster which prominently features Hans Heyer at the wheel of the Lancia Martini LC/2 84, which would retire in the race with mechanical problems.

Thanks to this great photograph, there is little doubt as to who was the sponsor of this poster...

The race was virtual Porsche party as the first 7 (!) places went to Porsche 956's and was won by Henri Pescarolo & Klaus Ludwig in their # 7 Porsche 956B with a total of 360 laps to their name.

The 1986 Le Mans poster is part of the "The star car used for sponsorship" era in Le Mans posters which lasted from 1981 to 1997.

The production of the 1986 Le mans poster was in the hands of the S. Conseil agency who based their design on a highly life-like illustration of the Kouros Mercedes who was the sponsor of the 1986 poster.

Despite starring on the 1986 poster, the car did not win the race... it blew its engine after 61 laps, at around 21.00H on Saturday evening.

The race was won by Derek Bell / Hans-Joachim Stuck / Al Holbert in their # 1 Porsche 962 C with a total of 367 laps to their name.
